How do I create a new page in the UMW Wiki?

To create a new page in UMW Wiki you have couple of options. First, from any blog post or page in UMW Blogs you can simply put double square brackets around a single word or many, and automatically a new page in UMW Wiki will be created once you published that blog post or page.

For example:

  [[The is a new page]]

Would create a page immediately on UMW Wiki called "This is a new page." You could then click on that link and be brought directly to the Wiki page and edit it.

Alternatively, once you already have a Wiki page and you want to create a new page off your existing page, simply click on the edit tab in the sidebar to edit the page.

After that, put double square brackets around a word, phrase or sentence within the wiki, and immediately it will create a new page you can once again edit.

The way to create a link is to place the new page's title in double brackets, like so:

 [[Page title]]

After that, save the page, and your selected text will show up as a red link which, when clicked, will bring you to an edit page for your new page. After that, follow the same pattern by editing and saving your new page.

How do I link to an external site?

To link to an external site in MediaWiki, you place single brackets around both the URl and the term you want linked. For example:

 I use [ Google] to search.

Uploading images is not currently working in UMW Wiki, we recommend you using the linking to an online image option delineated below.

Linking to an online image

To link to an image already online, paste the URL of an image to the page. So just about any image Rl around the web will easily embed in the UMW Wiki with a simple copy and paste. Keep in mind though, you may have to resize this image, and you cannot do that from MediaWiki, you have to resize the actual image you are linking to.

If you need to do this, you can put an image online by using a free online application. For example, Flickr accounts come in handy for this. Please don't link to images on sites where sign-in is required, like Facebook, the image will not show up on the UMW Wiki.

How do I add headers?

Headers are very useful for organizing information on a wiki page, and once you can the hang of headers, you'll realize they do a lot of the organizational work for you. Here is how they work:

What you'll realize is that you can edit each of the header section independently, and they begin to nest the subheaders to help you organize subsections of a document.

How do I add or remove a table of contents?

A TOC is added automatically as soon as you have more than three headers. To add one with fewer than four headers, type __FORCETOC__ anywhere on the page or __TOC__ at the position where you want to have the TOC.

To remove a table of contents from a page, add __NOTOC__ anywhere on the page.

How do I add a bulleted list?

To add a series of bullets to a list, you simply place an asterisk (*) in front of each link of text.

How do I revert a page to an earlier version?

  • Go to the page you wish to revert, click on the History tab at the top of the page, then click on the time and date of the earlier version you want to revert to. It will not work if you click on 'cur', 'last', or "Compare selected versions".
  • When the page displays, text similar to this: (Revision as of 23:19 Jul 15, 2003), will display. It appears below the page's title, in place of the From {project name}, usually seen.
  • Verify that you've selected the correct version, then click a link to edit the page as you would normally.
  • You'll get a warning, above the edit box, about editing an out-of-date revision.
  • Ignore the warning and save the page.

How do I create a "block quote?"

In case you were wondering - this is a blockquote.

When editing the page, simply leave one blank space at the beginning of the line. In other words, indent the line one space.

How do I change the text color?

You use the Span Style tags to mark the color of text

How to I cite in MediaWiki?

The Cite Extension allows you to build in a more complex citation structure into your wiki pages. Download the extension here. The basic concept of the <ref> tag in MediaWiki is that it inserts the text enclosed by the ref tags as a footnote in a designated section, which you indicate with the placeholder tag <references/>. The new format cannot be used interchangeably with the old format - you must pick one or the other.

If you forget to include <references/> at the end of the article, none of the footnotes will appear.

This page itself uses footnotes, such as the one at the end of this sentence.[1] If you view the source of this page by clicking "Edit this page", you can see a working example of footnotes.

Multiple uses of the same footnote

To give a footnote a unique identifier, use <ref name="name">. You can then refer to the same footnote again by using a ref tag with the same name. The text inside the second tag doesn't matter, because the text already exists in the first reference. You can either copy the whole footnote, or you can use a terminated empty ref tag that looks like this: <ref name="name"/>.

In the following example, the same source is cited three times.

This is an example of multiple references to the same footnote.<ref name="multiple">Remember that when you refer to the same footnote multiple times, the text from the first reference is used.</ref>

Such references are particularly useful when citing sources, if different statements come from the same source.<ref name="multiple">This text is superfluous, and won't show up anywhere. We may as well just use an empty tag.</ref>

A concise way to make multiple references is to use empty ref tags, which have a slash at the end. Although this may reduce redundant work, please be aware that if a future editor removes the first reference, this will result in the loss of all references using the empty ref tags.<ref name="multiple" />

To place a YouTube video in a wiki page go to YouTube find the video you want to insert and copy the unique identifier which is something like the red text at the end of the following url:

How do I insert audio files in the UWM Wiki?

You have a few options in this regard.

Uploading an audio file

To upload an mp3 file to UMW Wiki, click on the upload file link in the sidebar and once you upload the file coy the file name. After that, include the file name, for example mymp3.mp3, as illustrated below.


Inluding an MP3 file that is already on the web

The following code plays the remote mp3-file from the URL


Playing more than one mp3 file

The following example plays the two uploaded files mymp3.mp3 and yourmp3.mp3 one after the other, autostarts playing when the site is loaded and loops the files:
